Miss Hogg, school mistress turned private detective, and her old friend Milly Brown, children’s author, are caught up in the first attempted murder at a neighbouring house of bedsits. As the plot thickens, a once famous stage beauty, an elusive American private eye, medical students, drama students and drama queens are drawn into the mystery. Murky pasts are  uncovered, papers lost in the Blitz are tracked down and identities are confused as Hogg and Milly sleuth around the Scottish Highlands, Rutland and West End theatres and hotels.
    Hogg, forthright, resourceful and unafraid, solves her cases with intuition and common sense rather than forensics.  She has a perfect foil in Milly, Watson to her Holmes, with a witty line in idiosyncratic asides.
